N.M. Judge Upholds Ruling Against Photographers Who Refused to Work at Lesbian Commitment Ceremony

A judge in New Mexico on Dec. 18 upheld a ruling against two Christian photographers who refused to take pictures at a commitment ceremony that two lesbian women wanted to hold in 2006. Barring an appeal, the photographers, Elaine and Jon Huguenin, will have to pay one of the women more than $6,600 in attorney’s fees because they were found to have discriminated against her and her partner. Read the entire story here.

I don’t know what the laws of the state of New Mexico are, but I find it ridiculous that people with deeply-held Christian beliefs should be forced to go against those beliefs by working at a homosexual commitment ceremony. I’m sure there are plenty of other photography companies that would have been happy to photograph this ceremony. These two women should have had no problems getting pictures at their ceremony. I think the people of New Mexico should put some pressure on their elected officials to change their discrimination laws so that there are some reasonable exemptions for people with deeply-held religious beliefs.

Truly an inspiring blog. I came across it recently while researching a verse from Deuteronomy for a college paper. After searching through Google for historical analysis concerning the "For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good country…" passage I found one of your posts. As an agnostic struggling to retain his long lost Roman Catholic upbringing I can only say that your blog has been a guiding light and source of genuine inspiration. Thank you and please keep writing.
